Sefer Raziel HaMalakh

The angel's gift to Adam

סֵפֶר רָזִיאֵל הַמַּלְאָךְ — 'Book of the Angel Raziel.' Legend holds the angel Raziel gave it to Adam after the Fall so humanity could find its way home. The medieval text is a labyrinth of angelology, divine names, planetary seals, and protective charms.

The Book of Enoch

The Watchers, the Nephilim, the Fall

1 Enoch — banished from the Christian canon by the 4th century, but preserved in Ethiopia and rediscovered by James Bruce in 1773. The text relates the fall of the Watcher-angels who descended to Mt. Hermon, took human wives, and taught humanity metalwork, sorcery, and astrology. Their offspring, the Nephilim, brought the Flood.

Clavicula Salomonis · Key of Solomon

The grimoire of the ringed king

Mafteaḥ Shelomoh — 'The Key of Solomon.' A goetic handbook of seals, conjurations, and 44 pentacles attributed to King Solomon, who in legend bound 72 demons with his ring to build the First Temple. The most copied grimoire in Western magic.

The revelations of the Thrice-Greatest

Seventeen Greek treatises attributed to Hermes Trismegistus — Hermes the Thrice-Greatest, syncretism of Thoth and Hermes. The Hermetica are the philosophical headwaters of every Western mystical tradition that follows: alchemy, Kabbalah's outer schools, the Picatrix, the Rosicrucians, Jung.

The Renaissance synthesis

De Occulta Philosophia Libri Tres — Agrippa's masterwork, the great encyclopedia of Renaissance magic. He gathered Hermetica, Kabbalah, Neoplatonism, Picatrix, and folk magic into one architecture in three books: Natural, Celestial, and Ceremonial magic.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law

Three chapters dictated over three days in a Cairo hotel room: the founding scripture of Thelema. Crowley claimed an entity calling itself Aiwass spoke aloud while he wrote. Whether prophecy, dream, or invention, the book is the closing bracket of the Western magical tradition that began with Hermes Trismegistus.
